FILTERED SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

TALKING POINTS--AND IT IS TIME TO SPEAK OUT!!!
- Many districts do not really follow CIPA
- Filtering should not be based on paranoia
- Filtering should not be based on convenience
- Professionals must be making filtering decisions
- There should be someone on each campus that can promptly override the filter.

WHAT WORKS FOR OTHERS (Comments from Survey...)
- "Push, Push, Push. We are currently doing that with Wikis. We sort of got blogs, though it is limited. It is showing how they can be used and addressing security concerns. Our tech people are mostly in favor, it's higher up."
- "It is important to have the support of administrators. I also have agreed to take responsibility for any violations to the Internet Acceptable Use Policy. In most cases these can be used as a teachable moment. We have also found that students are motivated by activities such as podcasting, video making, website building, games, and digital photography. Think.com provides the students with a "My Space" type of experience in a controlled environment. Most students don't want to loose these privileges so we have had only minor problems with Internet misuse."
- "What is being used is the direct result of the intervention of a fellow teacher and me! We work as a subversive pair, adding to the tools that are at the disposal of our teachers. Once we used Skype to converse with students in a school in another country, and did so during a family potluck to show off to parents, who then bragged to administration about the wonderful program. We now can use Skype openly and for any purpose."
- "AS librarians we have been participating in a cohort to learn about 2.0 but have had a lot of obstacles to jump over. All of the sites that we need to use to complete the projects to learn about all of the exciting websites are blocked by our server. We have to ask the IT department to unblock them or have an administrator unblock them. Most of our administrators do not even have authority to unblock sites now. It gets really frustrating when you are trying to learn and you cant even get on the site."
- I proposed class group wikis as the product for junior research this year. It was our first attempt to have students produce web 2.0 products and there was some success. I think it has helped open the door to newer technologies."
- "We are doing the 23 things, which is a long but good introduction to the web 2.0 tools. It is also available on the Spring Branch ISD Library Resources page. http://library.springbranchisd.com/library-resources/"
